A unique guide to the monuments of Athens, written by David W. Rupp, a Canadian professor at Brock University (Department of Classics), who spends the greater part of his time living and working in Greece on the excavations of the American Archaeological Mission at Pacheia Ammos in Lasithi, Crete. He shares his time between Ontario, Canada, Crete and Athens where he lives with his family (he is married to Greek archaeologist Metaxia Tsipopoulou and they have a son, Romanos). Athens is his great love and he has explored and studied it as few ever have. His book, 'Peripatoi: Athenian Walks', is an original guide which takes the visitor to the city on a tour of the monuments and sights, though three carefully planned itineraries.
The writer focuses on buildings, which at first glance may not seem to be special, but actually carry significant historical weight, are of architectural interest or house important functions. The itineraries are structured so that they can be taken in stages, according to the time available and your stamina. They, either start or end, at a metro station, provide for many resting points, coffee and rest room stops, and have very explicit directions so that you do not get lost. They are, of course, accompanied by detailed maps designed by ROAD especially for this publication and many photographs. The second edition, which is in English, has been updated and contains a great deal of new information.
